The love of reading and my creative imagination awaked a desire in me to show others My teaching journey started more than 10 years ago with volunteering at a special education unit in a primary school. Teaching comes from the heart and for me, this start was magical. Awakening the soul of a child, bringing forth what was already within and adding that element of having a special child believing in themselves was enough to spark the wheel of curiosity to learn in these young minds. From then, teaching has led me to multi-cultural classrooms, teaching unattached and at-risk youth not just English language but the hidden curriculum. Such are the chapters I have been writing in my teaching career.
I have done a minor in Literacy Education which qualifies me as a reading coach. I am currently completing my Postgraduate Diploma in English and moving on to a Masters in Literacy Education. I have worked as a language and literacy teacher with the HEART NSTA Trust for four years. I am currently teaching Grade 5 Language Arts and Ability with PTRS Homeschool Academy.
For the past five years, I have been aiding the development of English Language and literacy skills of learners from the primary level to the adult level. This comes naturally for me because as Freire puts it” Reading is not walking on the words; it's grasping the soul of them. This has guided the way I teach reading and English language. I awaken in another mind the soul the power of reading.
My philosophy of teaching and learning is still developing but it is underpinned in learner-centered pedagogy. The classroom is full of diversities and multiple intelligences and this is something I embrace by always adopting an inclusive approach to teaching and learning.
